EPA Environmental Justice Division Director Will Address NACEDA Summit
 Jacob Burney will speak with community development association professionals in three different ways at the NACEDA Summit, which will be held on October 23-25 in Atlanta. Burney directs the Grants Management Division of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Community Service Support. The office facilitates the distribution of grant funding to community-based organizations and their partners. In addition, the office will offer technical assistance to community organizations and others to plan for the future, effectively compete for funding, and sustainably implement funding to revitalize their communities. A critical complement to these new grants and technical assistance resources will be the ability of EPA, particularly through regional offices, to directly engage and collaborate with more communities.
Burney will give a special presentation on EPA environmental justice grants and technical assistance, then participate in a discussion session titled “Environmental Justice & the Vital Role of Community Developers.” He will also hold “office hours” to answer questions personally. Meet NACEDA’s Newest Staff Members
 NACEDA is excited to introduce AmeriCorps VISTA, Shayna Orensztein (left), Stevenson Fellow Carly Collins (center), and AmeriCorps VISTA Kadasha Hershey (right). Shayna Orensztein joins NACEDA as the Grounding Values Research VISTA. In this role, she disseminates research findings about the financial health and policy areas central to the long-term capabilities of community economic development organizations. She received her Master’s degree in Global Health from the University of California San Diego. Carly Collins comes to NACEDA as the Stevenson Center Fellow to gain professional knowledge in community development and coordinate our Technical Assistance program. She is in the process of receiving a graduate degree in Anthropology and Applied Community and Economic Development from Illinois State University. System Change VISTA Kadasha Hershey is working to adapt NACEDA’s communications systems to share resources and facilitate relationship building more effectively with community-based development organizations. Additionally, she plays an integral role in planning the NACEDA Summit. She received her Master's in Social Work degree from Howard University.

Meet Our Arizona and Massachusetts Members’ New Executive Directors
 Nicole Newman, executive director of the Arizona Housing Coalition, has extensive experience in executive leadership, nonprofit management, coalition building, and organizational development. She most recently served as Principal of Strative, LLC, an executive coaching and organizational strategic planning consulting firm. The Arizona Housing Coalition leads the effort to end homelessness and advocate for safe, affordable homes for all Arizonans. “I envision the Arizona Housing Coalition as the central repository for all housing and homelessness-related data within the state of Arizona,” said Newman. “Our ultimate goal is to ensure that every resident of Arizona has access to affordable housing and the necessary resources to achieve that goal.” Read the announcement to learn more about Newman. She replaced former Executive Director Joan Serviss.  Emily Haber joined the Massachusetts Association of Community Development Corporations (MACDC) as their new Chief Executive Officer and President in August. Haber previously served for 15 years as the Chief Executive Officer of the Massachusetts Service Alliance, where she managed hundreds of organizations across the Commonwealth as they provided support to local communities. MACDC is an association of mission-driven community development organizations. They seek to build and sustain a high performing and adaptive community development sector, supported by private and public investment and sound public policies. “I am excited to support the robust network of CDCs across the Commonwealth as they tackle the pressing issues of affordable housing, economic development, and community health,” said Haber. “I look forward to our work building a more just and equitable Massachusetts, and providing residents and businesses in all of our communities opportunities to thrive.” Read her bio to learn more about Haber. Antiracist Community Development Website Launched
ThirdSpace Action Lab introduced The People's Practice – a pivotal platform for anti-racist community development. This website compiles insights from 87 practitioners, serves as a hub for dialogue and reflection, and advances anti-racist community development practices. It was forged through ThirdSpace Action Lab's extensive research, which was supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The NACEDA Summit will feature an immersive workshop led by ThirdSpace Action Lab and resident storytellers. It will explore the current state of our field, how racism shows up today, antiracist community development practices, and the impact of politics and policies. The People & Places Collaborative’s goal is to make the systems that support this country’s community development field more equitable. The Advocacy Director will advance the perspectives of the Collaborative among federal agencies, Members of Congress, and their staffs. The Collaborative’s central policy issues include community economic development, affordable housing, small business support, and banking regulation as it relates to the Community Reinvestment Act.
