A happy family with their new home The National Alliance of Community Economic Development Associations (NACEDA) serves Community Economic Development Associations or nonprofit corporations that develop:
  • Affordable housing,
  • Create economic opportunity for distressed communities,
  • Empower low-income people to create positive change in their lives, and
  • Provide social services.

Local associations provide many direct services to their members, including:

  • State policy work,
  • Training,
  • Technical assistance,
  • Peer support and
  • Capacity building programs, and
  • Research.

Affordable housing is latest victim of credit crunch reverberating through financial markets.
Projects are being canceled because some of the nation's largest financial companies, including Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Bank of America, have scaled back their participation in the federal government's largest and most prolific affordable housing tax-credit program, designed to boost construction of below-market-rent apartments. The National Alliance of Community Economic Development Associations (NACEDA) applauds the Senate's Foreclosure Prevention Act of 2008
February 19, 2008 - The new bill has many positive initiatives to address the staggering increase in foreclosure rates in low-income communities, which have been unduly affected by this national epidemic. However some tweaks are still needed in this important legislation. S.2636 would provide $4 billion in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds for purchase and rehab of foreclosed properties. Nonprofits and CEDs Should Play Lead Role in Foreclosed Property Disposition if Economic Stimulus Legislation Moves Forward
January 17, 2008 - "The foreclosure crisis is a big part of the reason that our economy is struggling so we think the stimulus bill should help address this issue. We need to stop foreclosures whenever possible, but when they do occur we need to make sure that those properties are purchased by responsible parties who will maintain them and keep the neighborhood stable. Federal Predatory Lending Regs a Step in the Right Direction;
Stronger Language Needed
While the federal government is making a significant effort to curb the devastating impact of predatory and other deceptive mortgage lending practices, new proposed regulations do not go nearly far enough to protect the most at-risk borrowers, those with low-and moderate incomes. NACEDA would like to see the regulations ban prepayment penalties, require escrows on sub-prime loans and increase liability for the secondary market. Read our public statement for details.

10 States Pass Foreclosure Legislation;
Community Development Groups Lead Charge for Change
Without a federal solution to the staggering foreclosure problem, states, at the urging of community development groups, are taking action and passing foreclosure-prevention legislation, according to a national group (that would be NACEDA) representing local organizations that work with low and moderate-income populations. NACEDA Elects New Officers, Celebrates New Members
The only national organization representing community economic development corporations (CDCs) across the country elected new officers at a July meeting in Chicago. NACEDA also celebrated the addition of 10 new members since February. NACEDA's members represent more than 1,200 CDCs nationally. Read our press release for details.

This publication of the National Housing Institute offers CDCs, local officials, and other stakeholders, including local institutional, business, and community leaders, a new way to look at how they can manage neighborhood change in order to bring about sustainable and equitable revitalization.
